Sunflower Mission

Sunflower Mission is a 501(c)3 organization committed to improving the lives of the people in Vietnam, mainly through educational assistance programs.

THE MISSION:

TO EDUCATE AND GIVE HOPE FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE.

Sunflower Mission is a non-governmental, non-religious, and non-political organization committed to improving lives through educational assistance programs and identifying the Vietnamese-American youth leaders of tomorrow through leadership development. They bring school facilities, teaching and learning materials, and scholarships to teachers and students in Vietnam.

THE SERVICES:

  1. SCHOLARSHIPS: Sunflower Mission currently supports four scholarship programs. In total they have awarded more than 24,647 scholarships to grade school and college/university students and 649 of their scholarship recipients have gone on to graduate from college with degrees in medicine, engineering, education and finance.

  2. WORK CAMP: Sunflower Mission’s annual Work Camp is an opportunity for their supporters to see, hear, and experience all of their work, first-hand. The work camp group travels together in Vietnam and individuals have the opportunity to assist with light construction, student mentoring, completion ceremonies, and many other engaging activities.

  3. SCHOOL BUILDING: Sunflower Mission has built 181 classrooms, renovated 18 classrooms, and implemented a maintenance program overseeing all 63 schools built throughout Vietnam. They built their first school in 2003 in partnership with YMCA International in Thanh Thoi B village, Mo Cay district, Ben Tre province.

  4. HEALTH AND HYGIENE EDUCATION INITIATIVE: Health and Hygiene Education Initiative (HHEI) was launched in 2016 at one school in Vietnam. They now have a total of 6 participating schools. HHEI aims to teach students the basics of hand-washing, cleanliness, and health. Another part of this program is to encourage students to help maintain a clean classroom and personal desk area.

  5. ENGLISH INITIATIVE: Launched in 2018, English Initiative (EI) was designed to help their college scholarship recipients in Vietnam to improve their English, speaking, and writing abilities, which are increasingly important skills in today’s professional world. Via video chat, mentors (US-based participants) and mentees (Vietnam-based participants) have weekly conversations about everyday topics: future careers, hobbies, daily lives, etc.
