DOMUS

NO CHILD SHALL BE DENIED HOPE, LOVE, OR A FAIR CHANCE IN LIFE. DOMUS BUILDS LOVING RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUNG PEOPLE FACING ADVERSITY, EMPOWERING THEM TO PURSUE THEIR PATH TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY.

DOMUS is an anti-racist and trauma-responsive organization that sees love and a positive youth development approach as critical elements in helping young people reclaim their power to make positive changes. These four elements underline Domus’ approach to supporting young people. Each is interwoven with the other; all are integral to the success of our outcome-producing programs.

MORE THAN 1 OUT OF 5 CT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE DISENGAGED AND DISCONNECTED. Adverse childhood experiences imperil the lives of young people and the success of our neighborhoods and communities. Because of devastating childhood trauma, much of it caused or intensified by systemic racism, tens of thousands of young people in Connecticut are failing in or dropping out of high school or are unsuccessful in the workplace. They struggle with school or job attendance, behavior, and/or academics because of physical or mental health challenges, poverty, self or family justice system involvement, and housing instability.

THE FOLLOWING CORE PRINCIPLES GUIDE DOMUS’ WORK AND DECISIONS:

1: Our work is about the kids.

2: We never give up on people.

3: Everyone should be treated with dignity & respect.

4: People should have many chances to learn & grow from their mistakes.

5: Loving relationships change people.
