DC Central Kitchen

DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is an iconic nonprofit and social enterprise that combats hunger and poverty through job training and job creation. Their approach provides hands-on culinary job training while creating living-wage jobs and bringing nutritious, dignified food where it is most needed in Washington, DC.

THE MISSION: To use food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds and build communities.

DC Central Kitchen serves scratch-cooked farm-to-school meals in DC schools; delivers fresh, affordable produce to corner stores in neighborhoods without supermarkets; provides delicious catering; and operates fast-casual cafes that also provide on-the-job training.

Last year, DC Central Kitchen prepared 2.7 million meals for schools, shelters, and nonprofits, invested nearly $1m into locally sourced produce, provided 30 schools with their healthy, scratch-cooked meals, had an 89% job placement rate for the 113 graduates of the Culinary Job Training program, and delivered 390,000 units of produce and healthy snacks to 53 corner stores in neighborhoods without access to grocery stores. As of today they have engaged over 15,000 volunteers during the first year at their new home, the Klein Center for Jobs and Justice.
